FFW
asks for more programs to promote
"Decent Work" on Labor Day

The
FFW celebrated International Labor Day with other brothers and sisters
in the Philippine Labor movement by calling for the enhancement
of programs that create and help sustain decent work, recognize
and promote rights at work, widen the scope of social protection
and institutionalize social dialogue. (see FFW's Labor Day Statement
in Filipino)
This declaration was made by FFW National President Atty. Allan
S.Montañoand FFWNational Vice President Jose Sonny Matula,
who both addressed the gathering of trade unionsat the Folk Arts
Theater in Manila on Labor Day Morning. Earlier in the day, around
4,000 members of the Federation marched from its national headquarters
along Taft Avenue in Manila to the venue of the gathering found
in the reclamation area, which usually hosts concerts. On Labor
Day, though, the songs gave way to the chants of labor for more
meaningful programs.
The
highlight of the Program was the keynote speech of the President
of the Republic of the Philippines Ms Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who
promised several non-wage packages for the workers. Also in attendance
were Vice President Noli De Castro, Labor Secretary Arturo Brion,
ILO-SRO in Manila Director Linda Wirth and leaders of labor groups.
